Retention Schedule = how long to keep things

The Connecticut State Library issues a retention schedule for the State Government, Towns, etc.  These are their recommendations from 2012.\r\n

  • Annual Reports/ Meeting — Permanent
  • \r\n

  • Annual tax levy –– 3 years or until audited
  • \r\n

  • Bank statements — 3 years or until audited
  • \r\n

  • Bills paid — 3 years or until audited
  • \r\n

  • ByLaws— permanent
  • \r\n

  • Cancelled checks — 3 years or until audited
  • \r\n

  • Correspondence – 2 years
  • \r\n

  • Deeds or easements — permanent
  • \r\n

  • Foreclosure – 1 year after case closed
  • \r\n

  • Insurance — 3 years or until audited
  • \r\n

  • Litigation files (court cases) — 5 years after resolution
  • \r\n

  • Meeting records/minutes — permanent
  • \r\n

  • Newspaper clippings — 2 years
  • \r\n

  • Website — until updated
  • \r\n
